Treating Children Colds, Fever and Dose of Love

Tips and advice for parents to combat Colds and Fever with a dose of Love.

Do you notice the change in your child when they start to get ill? Daily rhythms and dynamics of my toddler were usually full of laughter and constant movement. Suddenly, there he sat lethargic, glassy eyed and quiet showing no interest in his favorite toys or other activities.

Illness, pain or suffering is the one reality as parents that we cannot take away. We are left feeling helpless and distressed in our inability to tackle a situation we have no control over. We must ride this illness through with our child.

The best we can do is stand on guard to provide comfort and tender loving care. We can start with checking for a fever and pulling out the children’s Tylenol to combat the fever and aches that usually accompany a cold. Note the time and set to follow a strict schedule, to give this to your child every 3-4 hours, as directed until the fever subsides.

Treat the Cause, Not the Symptoms

A Yemeni judge is pioneering a religious re-education programme for Islamic militant prisoners and claims a 90% success rate, writes Brian Whitaker

An icy wind was blowing in the streets of Westminster and there were flakes of snow in the air, but the hotel was warm inside. With its wood panelling and comfy armchairs, the lobby resembled something between a gentleman's club and a country mansion: the essence of Englishness.

Enter the incongruous figure of Judge Hamoud Abdulhamid al-Hitar, dressed in a long black robe, a ceremonial dagger at his waist and a copy of the Guardian under his arm.

A judge in the high court of Yemen, he had been invited to London by the British government because the Foreign Office, the attorney general and the Metropolitan police, not to mention several Muslim organisations, all wanted to know about his unusual method of fighting terrorism - by theological dialogue.

Tea and Religion

Beverages appear on the altars of faiths around the world at all junctures in history, often as offerings. Tea is no exception. Find out more about how tea became part of different religious traditions.

Several religions use tea in their ceremonies. China was the first to use tea in a religious role. The Japanese adopted the practice and took it to the extreme. Today most Asian countries have some sort of religious or cultural ceremony related to tea.

The tea ceremony of China no longer has significant religious meaning. Instead, it is all about honoring the tea including the flavor, scent and visual beauty. There is a specific way to make tea for a Chinese tea ceremony. Pour hot water into a teapot to warm it and pour it back out. Add tea leaves and pour hot water half full into the tea pot pouring it out almost immediately leaving the tea leaves in the pot. Fill the teapot with water this time but be careful not to let bubbles form. The tea must be smooth and perfect. Steep the tea less than one minute, and then pour carefully into small cups while moving the teapot in a circular motion over the cups filling all at the same time. Use the pot five times with the same tea leaves and the whole object of the ceremony is to make the first pot taste exactly like the last one. Tea ceremonies occur any time and weddings seem to be a popular time to perform one. Other tea ceremonies occur in teahouses and serve as a tool for socialization.
